First of all, it’s a terrible thing that someone has been stabbed to death and that a family has lost a loved one. And yes, it’s a fact that knife crime is widely prevalent, and that most killings go unreported. The murder of an MP does protest no favours. It’s not just murder but an attack on democracy. If the knee jerk reaction to this, if it prevails, is to impose yet more imitations on peaceful free speech and accessibility to MPs to argue the case for change, that does none of us any good. Democracy is already under assault from within the system, as it seems that a coming new world order is crushing the independence of whatever vestiges we had of national government, and engagement at grass roots level – your local MP – is all we have to cling to. I think, as Hugo Talks suggests, that MPs will probably need better personal security to be able to operate safely in public surgeries, but I fear that this killing, if it turns out to be a terror attack as it was in the death of Jo Cox, could feed a move by the government to further limit our freedoms and freedom of speech, which none of us want.

I agree that it’s really hard to make changes in society for the better, but even if it were possible to put a stop to the status quo and bring down the whole political system by either mass civil disobedience or violent revolution, we would soon see the power vacuum filled by mob or gang rule – whose dangers Senga has already described. However, eventually, after a lot of strife and bloodshed, we would either find ourselves back on the path to some form of elected representation with which to try to reconstruct a fair and just society, or end up with a feudal tyranny ruled by a handful of despots who make it to the top.
